Joint Crisis Comittee: Balance of Power, 1977 - German High Command
Chair: Amy WangVice Chair: Amanda Hemenway
Crisis Directors: Noah Bate & Jon Hollander
In September 1940, Adolf Hitler, Fuhrer of the Third Reich died in his sleep. Although the mournful German press labeled it a freak heart failure, the man who might have become known as the greatest mass murderer in history had in fact been poisoned. The silent coup was executed by a group of German Wehrmacht officers and Nazi bureaucrats concerned that the Fuhrer's megalomania would lead to the destruction of Germany's new empire. Over the course of the next half decade, a series of escalating global conflicts known as "World War II" ended in nuclear stalemate and divided the world into three spheres of influence -Capitalist, Communist and Fascist. The year is now 1977. From the People's Republic of Iran to Vichy France and the divided Chinese capitals at Hong Kong and Beijing, unrest, dissent and ideological conflict threaten to overturn the established political orders. A generation after Kiev and Bucharest were turned into radioactive mass graves, the three powers' nuclear arsenals continue to g row. As tensions build and proxy wars from Finland to the Congo rage on, the "Hot Peace" - as the tri-polar world system has been named - threatens to explode into all-out war. In this simulation, delegates will represent members of the United States National Security Council, the German High Command and the Soviet Politburo in a world that might have been. Although the details of history are different, delegates will find that the more things change, the more they often stay the same.
