The Three Kingdoms: Aftermath of Red Cliff
208 A.D. The Han Dynasty of China is falling apart, with its Emperor acting simply as a figurehead and multiple warlords struggling for predominance. In the epic Battle of the Red Cliff, the strongest warlord, Cao Cao, suffered a catastrophic defeat against the coalition of Sun Quan and Liu Bei. However, this coalition is now facing its existential crisis: should this alliance be maintained? Many of Sun Quan’s followers didn’t think the alliance was a good idea to begin with; many others were extremely jealous of Kong Ming—the genius strategist of the era who recently joined Liu Bei and orchestrated this coalition—and consider him to be a significant threat. At the same time, Liu Bei has thousands of followers who have nowhere to stay and it seems that he is planning potential territorial expansion, which to Sun Quan is no less threatening than Cao Cao’s remaining forces. Meanwhile, Cao Cao still has significant resources at his home province despite the losses, and it seems that he can recover much faster than expected! The victory of the Red Cliff could not have happened without the Sun-Liu coalition; and the coalition is indispensable if Sun Quan and Liu Bei want to check Cao Cao’s intimidating power. Welcome to the most exciting period of Chinese ancient history: permanent separation or unified statehood? It’s in your hands.
