Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA)
The decisions of presidential cabinets, national assemblies, and councils have the power to make decisions with undeniable effects and repercussions not only in their respective countries, but also around the world. By the same token, the decisions they make are influenced by the fair and legitimate public image that they must maintain to the world at large. Terrorist groups don’t operate with this concern, but their freedom is also their limitation because they are not recognized as legitimate organizations. Nevertheless, they can still catalyze change and impact the entire world with their actions. This is the claim illustrated by the Basque Leadership Summit – Euskadi Ta Askatasuna committee; how a clandestine meeting of some of the world’s most dangerous terrorists and allies can have as much effect at an international level as legitimately recognized bodies. Positions range from high ranking members of the ETA, to leaders of illegal Basque political parties, to local representatives from Spain’s major political parties the PSOE and the PP, as well as representatives from the central government in Madrid. What will begin as a discussion on whether or not to continue negotiations with the Spanish government will quickly evolve into a debate on how to best achieve Basque independence and raise the quality of life in the Basque country, no matter what the cost to ETA.
