Andean Diplomatic Crisis
In 2008 Colombia faces difficult diplomatic choices, balancing the interests of diverse actors such as the USA and Venezula. Domestically, it faces pressure from a paramilitary movement and cross-border guerilla incursions. The delegates will take the roles of prominent members of Colombia’s Defense Ministry in the heart of the crisis. With Colombia’s own goals in mind–including the waning influence of FARC, the constant pressure from President Uribe–the delegates will also be faced with the international community and Colombia’s neighbors. Delegates will form the Colombia Defense Ministry and grapple the balance between its military capabilities and possible diplomatic solutions. Delegates will face fundamental issues of international relations, including the violation of a state’s sovereignty for domestic gains; the role of the international community and the impact of international pressure on isolated issues; and of course the threat of an outbreak of war. The delegates will have not only the future of South American balance of power, but that of the diplomatic relations of the entire western hemisphere.
